Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk live in Kansas which is also the home of fellow experimental shoegaze act Boo and Boo Too. Both seem to take pleasure in taking on pop music and then deconstructing it, until it exists as disparate fragments. ‘The Puppycat EP’ contains an oddly appetising trio of tracks that emulate stoned summer days.

Our story starts with ‘Fort Porkchop’, where the haunted vocals merge with throbbing rhythms and oodles of FX pedals. There are words but it’s impossible to figure them out amongst the dreamy noise. ‘Bird Hill Roll’ is stranger still. An acoustic melody is strummed away and the vocals are distorted yet further. Lastly, ‘Alter Altars’ is the most grounded song; nevertheless its folky tune and the disaffected vocals seem so jaded it feels like listening to The Beach Boys after the mother of all hangovers.

It’s hard to think of fifteen minutes of music as warped as ‘The Puppycat Ep’. Yet it’s also quite relaxing revelling in the layers of sound merging into a blurry, hazy whole.
